“Mission Impossible”: China’s Incredible Ten Day Hospital Construction In Response To The Coronavirus
In the Chinese city of Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus epidemic, a 1,000-bed hospital has been constructed in only ten days. The constructions started on January 23 and was completed in ten days. 1,400 medical staff from the Chinese armed forces will be moving in to treat victims of the virus.
An Enormous Challenge In Am Moment Of Need
Chinese officials have been referring to the project as “mission impossible” because of it’s extraordinary time-frame. Project manager Fang Xiang reportedly told local media: “For a project of this scale, it usually takes at least two years.” Despite the enormity of the challenge, the nation was able to watch the construction as it was live-streamed around the clock on China’s state broadcasters. An Astounding Logistical Achievement
The logistical challenge of completing a fully functional hospital within such a minute time frame earned the project it’s “mission impossible” moniker. The plan for the hospital was completed in only five hours, and the design draft within only 24 hours. Thousands of workers operated more than 800 pieces of heavy machinery in what could be described as a ballet of mechanical mastery and precision. The scale of this construction feat certainly must be seen to be believed!
The World Is Watching
With infected numbering in the tens of thousands, and deaths from the novel coronavirus now exceeding a thousand, the world is watching. The vast majority of confirmed cases remain in china, however the virus has been identified in several other countries around the globe. Chinese authorities currently report that the appearance of new cases is slowing, but the future spread of the virus is yet to be seen. The outbreak has now been labelled as a global “public health emergency” by the World Health Organisation.
A Construction To Relieve The Overburdened Medical Facilities
The Huoshenshan hospital is said to be a replica of the hospital that was constructed in response to the deadly Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome outbreak of 2003. The SARS outbreak was caused by a virus that is closely related to the new coronavirus strain.
In addition to the hospital seen above, a second hospital was completed in quick succession. The two facilities are now equipped to treat and contain those who have been infected, providing space to a potential 2,900 patients. The incredible speed with which these hospitals have been built certainly goes to show what feats of construction can be achieved.
